Full Description

Clipstone Park, with Cavendish Lodge and other features shown on Chapman's map of 1774. Extensive water meadows on Sanderson, 1835. (1)
A deer park at Clipstone was constructed near, and 15 years after the Royal Manor was begun (c 1180), and was extant until the C19. It was surrounded by a timber paling, partly reinforced by a ditch. A map shows the boundary at 1630, but the boundary prior to that could not be established. (5)
In 1609, it was estimated to contain 1583 acres, and in 1604 no red deer, but 60 fallow deer. It was 7 miles in circumference. After the Great Rebellion of 1641, many Royal parks, including Clipstone, were defaced, at which time it was held by William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle. (6)
First mention, 1176, owned by the Crown. (7)
