Full Description

House and park shown on Chapman's map of 1774, Hall and park on Sanderson 1835. Throsby says "The seat… is distinguished… by the variety of objects that surround it… A temple form, elevated above the circumjacent hills ... Appears lovely. The plantations, which are laid out with a degree of taste, at a nearer approach, although chiefly of a modem age, abound in variety". The hall, of c 1760, is listed grade II*. Now a nursing home. 100 years ago the village had four main houses, all others owned by them. Garden is 200 years old. French style formality. Wood to north to protect from winds, ditto on SW. 'Great Lawn' between leading down to River Trent looking towards Derbyshire Hills. Also two landscaped copses. Just after World War II, the Army, who owned the site at the time, sold 2 acres for a private house. There are some traces of the original garden in the private plot including hollies and an oak tree. (1)
Church constructed in 1874 at Brough was re-erected at Winthorpe Hall in 1885. It was renovated in 1951 to be used as the village hall. (5)
