Full Description
"Southwell Parks" shown. (2)
Southwell Park was known as the Little Park or New Park. There is reference in the Patent Rolls for 1330 to "the park of the Archbishop of York at Southwell" which may refer to this park. The area was approx 126 acres and as it was in the heart of Southwell it may well have been farmed as demesne land before it was enclosed as a park. The Bishop's Palace was dismantled during the Civil War and the park was sold. A map of 1683 shows the park entirely divided into fields of arable and pasture, much as it is today. (3)
See M3068 for Bishop's Palace.
