Full Description
Enclosed C17 formal garden near house, and C19 shrubbery, set in late C17 landscape park, c. 250ha. Annes1ey Hall principally C17, with C18 and C19 alterations and additions. Approach through centre arch of C19 gatehouse range to north-east of Hall Drive, dividing round oval lawn. To south-west of Hall, raised terrace walk and balustrade, C17 possibly 1671, extending south-west. Terrace walk has central double stair with balustrade. Walled formal garden with geometrical parterre and bedding, to north-west, open parkland beyond lawn and ha-ha to south-east. Further to south-west, c. 3ha of omamental woodland and shrubbery with meandering paths, C19, enclosing pool. Walled vegetable garden beyond to west. Woodland, c 4ha, to north-west of Hall, with ice-house. Extensive woodland 500m to east of Hall, with motte and bailey at Castle Hill, and remains of avenue, Byron's Walk, running 1km north-south. Viewpoint from Diadem Hill at southern end. Further south, in open ground, Oatmeal Pond. Other ponds, some now silted up, scattered in park. (2)
The NW corner of the park (Osier Wood/Osier Bed Wood) is a Nominated Site for Local Listing by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 918)(4).

Annesley Park - 600 acres with a plain wire fence. There is a natural water supply of one lake and eight ponds. The area is hilly with largr timber and bracken. There are 200 fallow deer and there were wild cattle here in 1669. (6)
Annesley - 780 acres, 450 open to the deer - a herd of 300 fallow deer. This park was enclosed by license dated 17.7.1673. (7)

There is no evidence as to the site of the Md deer park. The 1673 license does not relate to the deer-parks published on successive OS maps. (8)
