Full Description

House and grounds shown on Chapman's map of 1774, Sutton Hall with lake and details and Sutton Works to north on Sanderson 1835. School now on the site, the grounds are a public park. Mill (the Lawn). Mill house survives to north, listed grade II. Works, also grade II, part demolished in 1992. (1)
Original 18th century garden of the Unwin family, whose mansion once stood on Station Road.
The Lawn Pleasure Grounds encompass the grounds of the former Sutton Hall, built as the residence of Samuel Unwin, a merchant hosier, and the land associated with his nearby Cotton Spinning Mill and Mill Lake. Sutton Hall and most of the Mill complex no longer exist, but the Mill ruins and adjacent lake form the focal feature of the park today.A number of elements from the original landscape remain, for example the dam and dam wall. The ruins of some of the original mill remain, which have been developed into residential properties and parts of the boundary wall still show the larger structures and the location of the mill. (4)
Locally Listed by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 874) (4).
