Full Description

Skegby Hall (listed grade II) 1720 altered and extended late C19 and 1946. Built by Lindley family, passed to Dodsley family 1820, sold again in 1931. After WW2 sold to Notts County Council, converted to residential school. School closed end of 1980s, site now sold for development except playing fields and water features retained by Ashfield DC. Originally extensive water features included streams, ponds, boathouse (Dryad's temple) , bridge, waterfall, boat (the Nelson). Other features: grottoes, a pyramid, Dryad's hut, temple, two walks, triumphal arch, terrace, parachute. Main features remaining are watercourses and collecting ponds which feed them. Originally there were two parallel streams with weirs, the eastern one presumably the original mill stream, the other ornamental. Several large trees along the streams including beeches which possibly formed part of an avenue. Also a belt oftrees on the W boundary. The rest of the area has been levelled for playing fields though a small circular pond or 'basin' survives. A semi-circular slab bearing a date and initials has been reused to make a stone seat on the west side of the final pond. (1)
Locally Listed by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 875) (6).
