Full Description
C18 landscape park, c.35ha. Papplewick Hall, c.1781-87, for Frederick Montagu, architect uncertain, but possibly the Adam brothers. Additions C19 and C20. Hall looks to west across gently curving grassed valley to river Leen, which runs north-south from Newstead Abbey, and forming western border of Papplewick Park. Strawberry Hill Plantation to north-west, and belt of woodland north-south beyond river. View of St James' Church to south-west. A lesser view east from the Hall over Papp1ewick Moor. Visited by Mrs Delany (1700-88) between 1750s and 1780s and by William Mason (1724-97), in 1780s. The latter wrote a part of 'The English Garden' at Papplewick. Garden 'improvements' under way in 1756. Temple on far side of river Leenfrom this period, now dilapidated. Nearby, monument to Mason, c.1799, and on east side of river, monument to Thomas Gray, 1799. (2)
