Full Description

Between 1720 and 1725 Sir Thomas Parkyns J.P. (1662 - 1741) the 'Wrestling Baronet', rebuilt Bunny hall to his own designs. He also designed and built the village almshouses, school, stable block, two threshing barns, the laundry, the waterhouse, his church monument, the park wall and gateway. According to Susan Punt there are no maps or plans in existence which date the layout of the park or garden. However, it is known that Sir Thomas' interests certainly included garden and landscape design. In 1741 he was succeeded by his son, Thomas Boothby Parkyns. It was around this time that the carriage court was created and the walled kitchen garden was added. 'The Wilderness' is also shown on the Enclosure map. It is likely that the second Baron Rancliffe, George August Henry Anne Parkyns, created the formal garden which was described by Barker in 1835 as being in the Italian style with a fountain and flower beds. In 1990 the Hall and remaining grounds were purchased by Dr. Brian Bullas who is the current owner. Since that time the barns, stables and laundry building have all been converted to residential units which are in multiple ownership. The farmland to the east is now owned by Nottingham University. The Hall which is currently empty has been offered for sale since 1994. (2)
