Full Description

In 1698 the manor was purchased by Sir Thomas Parkyns (1664 - 1741) who was renowned for his exploits as a wrestler, antiquarian and amateur architect. As with Bunny, he designed and built a new hall. In 1774 Joseph Paget bought the house. It was around this time that the coach house and the walled kitchen garden were thought to have been built. In 1858 George Ernest Paget, later Sir Ernest, inherited the hall from his father. Sir Ernest was chairman of the Midland Railway Company. It was perhaps for this reason that he was able to negotiate the sale of the land immediately adjacent to the hall for the cutting required for the Midlands County railway which opened on 5th May 1840. He also had his own private platform built in the grounds of the hall which unfortunately no longer exists. In 1870 Sir Ernest carried out a number of alterations and extensions to the Hall which included the conservatory with its gabled bays on the east side. It is likely that the formal garden and ornamental parkland were contemporary with the improvements to the hall. The 1884 O.S. map shows an almost identical layout to that of today. (2)
