Summary

Archaeological work and a watching brief took place in 2008 prior to the repair of a fissure by UK Coal Mining Ltd on land at Whinbush Lane, Calverton. The area fell within the area of Scheduled Monument No. 29931 which contains the remains of two Roman marching camps. A ditch was recorded in trench 3 but left in situ.

Full Description

Archaeological work and a watching brief took place in 2008 prior to the repair of a fissure by UK Coal Mining Ltd. on land at Whinbush Lane, Calverton. The area fell within the area of Scheduled Monument No. 29931 which contains the remains of two Roman marching camps. Two areas of subsidence were investigated prior to repair. Trenches 1 and 2 produced no archaeological features or finds. Trench 3 produced the remains of a ditch running NE-SW. The ditch was left in situ so no dating evidence was recovered. (1)
