Full Description
Excavation has demonstrated that the archaeological remains are far more significant than the surviving earthworks suggest. The bank survives to a height of 0.52m above the original ground surface and has a width of up to 2.33m while the associated ditch is approximately 0.45m deep and 1.20m wide. The bank and ditch may originally have formed part of a circular enclosure, with the bank internal to the ditch. Environmental evidence suggests a wide date range from the Middle Bronze Age to 300 years ago. The only artefacts recovered were 8 Heat Shattered Pebbles. It is tentatively suggested that the earthwork could be Early Medieval in date and associated with the monumental landscape of Thynghowe. (1)
It was possible to identify in the resistance data the circular enclosure; this bank and ditch can be seen as a low resistance feature (the ditch) and high resistance (internal bank) during a geophysical resistance survey. (2)
The adjacent trackway is of 20th century date and revealed no evidence for any earlier track in this location. (1)
