Full Description

Located at the south-east corner of the trench was an apparently disturbed floor layer and robbed out wall of Romano-British date. The wall was linear, north-west to south-east, c.0.8m wide surviving to only one course of angular skerry stone. Along the western edge the robber trench contained a number of Romano-British structural finds including tile and tesserae, while 11th-13th century pottery suggests it represents robbing of medieval date.
The watching brief revealed the first evidence for a possible northern range to the large court-yarded villa proposed by Daniels. This would give a north to south dimension of 90m, which would put Southwell firmly amongst the larger sized villas within the East Midlands. (1)
