Full Description

Large channel open in pre-Roman period and used as a drainage feature during the Roman-British period. Cleaned, maintained and possibly straightened in places. Still open in the Medieval period. Possibly a former tributary of the Potwell Dyke. (2)
Sections excavated in trenches 2 and 6 in 2011 (1) and in 2012. Found to be c.10m wide and 2-3m deep with three recuts. Went out of use after RB period and slowly silted up. Contained RB pottery and spelt wheat, and Medieval pottery and crops (pea, barley, oats). Other finds include a Roman shoe, Medieval shoes and animal bone including one piece of fallow deer. (2)
