Full Description

Trench 5 - both articulated and disarticulated human remains were apparent suggesting the presence of numerous inhumation burials. However, due to the re-worked nature of this deposit, individual grave cutes could not be clearly identified. This deposit extended for more than 11m to the north and beyond both sides and the south end of the trench. At the north end of the trench, individual grave cuts were discernable, some of them intercutting. Two features were selected for further excavation.
Grave [515] - the individual had been laid on its side, with the head to the west, legs and arms drawn up almost in a crouched position. Hinge strap found close by which could be evidence of burial in a re-used wooden domestic chest. Right femur removed and radiocarbon dated to 665AD-866AD.
Grave [515] - three intercutting graves with all individuals laid out supine with head to west. One left femur removed for radiocarbon dating.
All remains were left in situ apart from the two bones taken for dating.
All features were sealed by c.0.3m of heavily reworked topsoil which contained Romano-British, medieval and 17th-18th century pottery and tile, a piece of worked antler (possibly a 9th-11th century comb) and a coper alloy dress fastener dated to 15th-16th century. (1)
The south part of the site contains a substantial burial ground: this area is to be preserved in situ and no further archaeological investigation or development took place here. The new service trench in Area C exposed a single narrow linear feature running east to west. It produced a small assemblage of human bone from a 2-3yr old infant, probably associated with the Middle Saxon cemetery in Area B (2)
