Full Description

Demolished terrace encountered during watching brief of excavation of house footing. This terrace appears on all 25" to the mile maps from 1878-9 to 1959-62. (Replaced by the welfare club building by 1970). The terrace appears to have had a communal back yard containing a number of small outhouses. The earliest available map of 1878-9 shows the terrace as a single block, but marks a pump to the rear of its north-western end: this was probably the well encountered in house plot 2, as the brick capping of the well indicates that the water was obtained via a pump, rather than by lowering a bucket. Mapping from 1899 shows the terrace as consisting of ten small, rectangular buildings with their longer axes perpendicular to the road. As no datable material was retrieved during the project no estimate of the age of the stone buildings can be made. Existing stone buildings on the opposite side of the road, which still indicate the materials and methods of local vernacular construction, are post-medieval in date. (1)
