Full Description
The geophysical survey undertaken in 2013 identified a number of rectilinear ditched features probably related to former field systems some of which correlate with the cropmarks – see figure 2 of report. The enclosures include a double ditched rectangular enclosure in field 4 which could be of prehistoric origin. The survey revealed features which could have previously been pits or hearths, along with a number of other possible cut features of archaeological origin.
Targeted trial trenches confirmed the evidence from the geophysics survey, and identified the ditches in trenches 1,6,10,11 and double ditched enclosure in trench 4. A number of possible internal features were revealed which weren’t found on the geophysics results.
Finds suggest a 1st-2nd AD date, one sherd from a curvilinear ditch in trench 8 could suggest and earlier than 1st century feature.
There is evidence of a domestic refuse deposit which could suggest settlement activity close by.
