Full Description
A complete millstone, probably moved to the hedge-line relatively recently, was recovered during fieldwalking. The millstone is almost complete with one slightly convex face of 56cm diameter and a seond flat but damaged face of about 51cm diameter. Several features suggest the primary use was as the lower stone of a mill operating in a horizontal plane. The hollow surrounding the eye could have been fashioned in order to convert this lower stone into an upper stone. The worn areas on the side might relate to a frame used to turn the stone or attach a handle. Many features of the stone can be paralleled amont Romano-British quernstones regionally and it was found in relation to Roman field systems. This is suggestive, but not conclusive, of a Romano-British date. (1)
