Full Description
Layers containing dense stone lumps and brick fragments interpreted as localised repair to the post-medieval road surface where carts turning from Lincoln Street and Newark Road into Newcastle Street had damaged the surface.
A west-east aligned brick wall was sealed by the road surfaces, probably a boundary wall for the Sun Inn before the post-medieval widening or realignment of the Great North Road, although it might have been a drain. Unfrogged red bricks, overfired, cream coloured mortar. Brick dimensions were 240mm x 120mm x 60mm.
In front of the Sun Inn, the post-medieval metalling sleaed a layer of soil and crushed brick and stone lumps, perhaps an attempt to consolidate the otherwise poorly metalled section of the road at the edge of the town centre. (1)
