Full Description
A single sample was taken from a purlin of this building in 1987. It produced a likely felling date of c.1584, but this was from one particularly short sample and is very dubious and is open to serious doubt. The date given was for guidance only and not for publication. (1)
When this property on Balderton Gate was originally investigated, no descritop was made and as it is unlisted, no description is registered at the council offices; these premises were unoccupied and attempts to gain entry in order to make one failed. All that can be said from the outside is that its south gate end is onto the road. A slice was taken ffrom a single purlin in this building and this work was carried out in December 1987. This sample was cross-matched against the reference chronologies and found to match at a first-ring date of AD 1507 and a last measured ring date of AD 1554. The last measured ring on this sample is the heartwood/sapood boundary ring. This is dated to AD 1554, which allows the calculation of an estimated felling date for the timber represented within the range AD 1569-1589. The dating by dendrochronology of a building with such a short, simple sample is dubious, and should definitely not be used as evidence of the date of a building. It is included here for the record.
