Full Description

The buildings are securely dated to the late 19th century and relate to the redevelopment of what was an important pre-enclosure village farm. During the 19th century farmers began to abandon their village centre locations and move to purpose built farms closer to the crops in the open countryside. The pre-enclosure and most likely pre-19th century farm buildings at Manor Farm were demolished and replaced by a smaller range of buildings in the space of some twenty years. These new buildings housed a small-scale dairy operation and stabling for household horses. Despite being purpose-built the buildings underwent alteration and modernisation, with two open shelter sheds being added almost immediately after the buildings were constructed. The buildings were further modified in the later 20th century when the site was reputedly used as a mink farm. There are limited traces of re-used materials within some of the buildings, most notably the tie beams of the Queen post trusses. It is possible that these are remnants of the extensive range of buildings demolished in the 1860s or 1870s in advance of the construction of the current buildings. (1)
