Full Description

The Carburton water meadow systems were constructed over a number of phases. The small amount of documentary evidence combined with historic mapping information points to an early 19th century inception for the water meadow system. This is comparable with other systems developed by the great landowners in the region. However, the sewage pipes and pit systems are lined with or constructed from Mansfield White stone and blue engineering bricks, the latter of which date stylistically from the later 19th century. This suggests at least two phases of construction and possibly more. A third phase can clearly be seen in the addition of 20th century breeze blocks to raise the ground level of the flood dyke in response to localised subsidence across the site. The repairs and additions to the site indicate that the water meadows were in use over many years. (1)

There is no documentary evidence for when the water meadows at Carburton were actually constructed, or for when they went out of use. (1)
