Full Description

The survey has identified limited geophysical evidence of potential archaeological remains - a small number of possible ditches in the north-western region (in proximity to a Scheduled Ancient Monument principally associated with Iron Age and Roman occupation), with at least one possible site of burning in the south-east region. (1)

Cockpit Hill, a Scheduled Iron Age and Roman settlement and Roman hill fort to the immediate north of the north-western part of the site. Excavation has uncovered a multi-ditched enclosed settlement apparently occupied in the Iron Age and Roman periods (the presence of Neolithic flint implements may also indicate earlier occupation of the site). Earthworks signify the remains of a large hilltop camp with a defensible double bank and ditch. To the north of the site are the remains of a medieval cockpit - a circular earth bank from which the hill derives its name. (1)
