Full Description

Known as 'The Boat and Horses' in 1876 when Samuel Scotton was the publican (Post Office Directory) [and on the 1882 OS map also been known as 'Boat Inn' (1914 OS Map)(4)]. For many years a Home Brewery tied-house. A brick and red-tile roofed building, with rendering. (1)
Appears on OS Map 1882 which shows L-Plan building with separate linear range to the rear of an enclosed plot, possible former stable range and yard. Annotated 'Boat & Horses Inn'(2)

Appears in the Nottingham Guardian: on 20th March 1851 when an inquest was held at the 'Boat Inn, Beeston' into the death of Matthew Palethorpe aged four. 15th Oct 1869 report on a Celery Show which took place at the pub on 2nd Oct 'when some fine celery was exhibited by thirteen members'.
Appears in Nottingham Evening Post on: 14th July 1883 as 'Boat Inn', 21st July 1883 J. Jamson advertised a two bed apartment to be let, on 9th April 1884 (Pigeon and Sparrow Shooting), on 19th Jan 1884 (Pigeon Shooting Ad). On 12th March 1884 (Sparrow Shooting Ad) on 19th December 1884 (Pigeon Shooting Ad) and (Bankrupt notice for John Jamson victualler), on 1st July 1885 Fowl Stealing offence, on 26th Aug 1885 as 'Boat and Horses', 9th Feb 1891 "Another part in "darkest England" illuminated by gas - The Boat Inn, Beeston Rylands" Adverts for dancing in the late 1800s in the Nottingham Evening Post.
Single-storey, six-bay former stable (now function room) adjoined the south east corner of the pub. Front elevation: Two doorways one with plank door and 3-pane overlight, second wider doorway with 3 1/2 pane overlight. High-level window formerly of four panes now replaced with two-pane window at some point between 2019 and 2022. Two infilled large windows with painted stone sills. Five brick pilasters divide the 6 bays. Infilled door or window in end bay with header. Brick-built, painted to front and end elevations which have cogged eaves, rear has brick band to eaves and two through-wall wall vents under a hipped slate roof. Further outbuildings sit to the rear of the pub. Brick-built under plain-tiled roofs. Possible pigeoncote or stable as has hayloft hatch under a gabled dormer, attached to a single-storey range, extended to the front to form a double garage. (Street View 2022)(5).
