Full Description

Pottery: 387 sherds: 9 Roman-British, 1 Saxo-Norman (Early Stamford Ware), 11 Medieval, 18, Late Medieval/Early Post Medieval, 52 Post Medieval, 282 Early Modern+, 14 undiagnostic.

Ceramic Building Material: 461 fragments were collected. 75% of the material was coded as RTMISC meaning that no diagnostic dating could be made. The majority of CBM material is modern brick, tile, and field drain dating from the 18th to 20th century.

Clay Tobacco Pipe: 75 fragments of clay tobacco pipe were collected, which were fairly evenly spread across the site. Apart from 2 bowls and 3 bowl fragments, the remains were all stem pieces. Given the bore, stem diameter and material most are 18th and 19th century. Two bowls indicate early pipe types of mid to late 17c origin.

Flint: 13 items with evidence of human tool making, 1 fire-cracked pebble recovered.

Glass: 26 fragments of glass were collected, the majority being modern in date. However, 7 glass fragments of possible 18th century dating have been retained for further investigation.

Miscellaneous Finds: There were 124 miscellaneous finds in total comprising: 18 pieces of coal/charcoal, 18 pieces of roofing slate, 4 animal bone fragments (1 a sheep’s ulna, 3 undiagnostic but probably bones from a small mammal or bird), 16 clay pigeon fragments, 1 piece of foam material. 63 items were classified as slag. Following identification by a geologist, the majority of these were classified as burnt shale, such as might be found in smouldering colliery spoil tips. There were 2 iron -based slag fragments, and 1 item of fused metal and clay that might possibly originate in a furnace floor (similar to that uncovered on the Burgage). 4 items of metal were collected. These were all modern and related to agricultural activity, for example a ball joint. Mortar / Plaster / Concrete: There were 10 pieces of undiagnostic mortar and/or plaster type material, and 1 lump of modern concrete. All were recorded and discarded.
