Description

8 fields surrounding the Brackenhurst Campus owned by Nottingham Trent Unversity in Southwell were subjected to fieldwalking surveys. Small Briggs - Aprox. 3.1 hectares. This diamond shaped field is on the southernmost end of the Nottingham Trent Brackenhurst estate, with its highest point at about 48 metres above sea level. Parkside Close - Aprox. 8.45 hectares. This large irregular shaped field runs southward from its entrance on Crink Lane, dropping from about 55 metres above sea level at its highest point to just over 40 metres at its lowest. The field is used for arable farming. Long Meadow - Aprox. 4.73 hectares.Long Meadow lies to the southwest of Parkside Close. Its highest point is about 45 metres above sea level in the NE corner and runs to just over 40 m in the SE corner with a very shallow re-entrant feature running in this direction. The field is used for arable farming. Top Close - Aprox. 3.86 hectares. Top Close sits north of Long Meadow to the south of Crink Lane. Adjoining Parkside Close in its most easterly corner, it is the smallest in this group of fields. Its highest point is about 50 metres above sea level along the northern edge and has a very slight downhill slope. The field is used for arable farming. Halloughton Dale - Aprox. 3.92 hectares. Halloughton Dale lies immediately to the north of the Brackenhurst Campus buildings and west of the Nottingham to Southwell Road. Parklane Close - Aprox. 5.16 hectares. Parklane Close lies immediately to the north of Halloughton Dale and east of a meadow that adjoins the main Nottingham to Southwell Road. It is one of the fields on the estate closest to the town centre. Plantation Close - Aprox. 4.18 hectares. Plantation Close is longer in the north south direction and lies south of the campus buildings. Sheep Walks West - Aprox. 7.61 hectares. Sheep Walks West lies on the southern perimeter of the estate with a track on its northern edge and Halloughton Dumble running below the southern one. A line-reconnaissance was carried out along transects with the aim to sample at least 10% of the surface area of a field. Where concentrations of finds such as flints might require more intense investigation, a detailed one-meter square grid analysis was proposed.Working from baselines, a grid was constructed with transects 15 metres apart; divided into stints 20 metres in length. The transects were walked by two people who followed a straight-line between markers, recovering finds from an arm span either side of the transect (approximately a 2.5 metre strip). Field boundaries were mapped initially by tracing from Google Earth and the pattern of transects and stints overlaid. Subsequent to initial recording researchers used QGIS, to map some of the finds using the centre of each stint. There were 6,136 items recovered from the fields and recorded. The variety of artefacts collected from all the fields walked provide evidence of human activity in the landscape across a wide timespan. Pottery sherds and fragments of ceramic building material (CBM) were found scattered widely across the site. Clay tobacco pipe fragments provide additional dating evidence within the Post Medieval to Early Modern periods as does the occasional glass sherd. Discarded oyster shell, animal bones and industrial waste materials such as coal and slag are found in some quantity indicating human activity, but do not provide dating evidence. There are signs of early human flint tool making, the majority of these finds were found in Small Briggs. There were 19 worked flint artefacts. Most of the flint pieces retained as worked are possible scrapers, bladelet fragments or core waste.
