Full Description
Pottery: 453 sherds; 3 Romano-British, 2 Early Medieval, 7 Medieval, 17 Late Medieval/Early Post-medieval, 224 Post Medieval, 183 Early Modern+, 17 undiagnostic.
Ceramic Building Material: 481 fragments were collected. 72% of the material was coded as RTMISC meaning that no diagnostic dating could be made. 2 Roman roof tegula fragments, 2 Roman tile fragments of some sort and 1 medieval roof tile were recorded. Other materials were modern brick, roof and drain fragments.
Clay Tobacco Pipe: 42 fragments were collected, predominately stems fragments, with one bowl fragment dating to early 17thC. Another bowl had an interesting leaf pattern from a 19th century moulded bowl.
Glass: 45 glass fragments were collected, mainly early industrial/modern in date. There were also 2 fragments of an early ‘onion’ bottle (17th century), and one base fragment of an octagonal vessel. These have been retained for further inspection.
Miscellaneous finds: 55 miscellaneous items were collected, including 20 oyster shells, 10 animal bones (medium to large mammals, 2 with butchery marks), 6 teeth (small and large mammals), 5 pieces of coal, 6 iron-slag fragments, 4 modern metal items, 3 slate roof tile fragments, and 1 building stone with mortar a chisel marks. These items were discarded.
