Cutting the natural deposits towards the southern end of an evaluation trench was a linear feature with moderately steep, slightly concave sides and a flat base. The feature was orientated east to west and was at least 1.8m long, 1.5m wide and 0.36m deep. Within this feature was a deposit of loose, mid orangey brown silty sand; no dating evidence was recovered from this deposit. The feature was sealed by a 0.33m thick layer of topsoil.

The ditch in the evaluation trench , in the east of the site, has an east to west orientation and could represent a field boundary of Iron Age or Roman date; long boundaries of ‘brickwork pattern’ field systems identified near the site are on similar orientations to this ditch. Its alignment projected westwards suggested it would pass through two additional trenches but the ditch was not observed in them. This may indicate that it terminated before reaching these trenches to the west, or that its projected course deviated significantly from a straight line. The projected courses of the ditches in this trenches and another evaluation trench shows a perpendicular alignment, perhaps indicating that they are part of the same field system.

Given that Iron Age or Roman field systems were located away from areas of settlement, a lack of dating evidence such as pottery is typical for field boundaries of this period. While it is possible that the linear features in the east of the site are of Iron Age or Roman date,there is no dating evidence to support this, and the features could alternatively relate to later agricultural activity of the medieval or post-medieval periods.
