Abstract/Summary
The report describes the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out on land off Great North Road, Torworth, Nottinghamshire.
The aim of the work was to identify and record any archaeological remains within the proposed development area. Cropmarks of possible Iron Age or Roman field systems had previously been identified on aerial photographs on and near the site, and it was anticipated that similar features may be discovered during the archaeological work.
Four ditches or gullies, one pit and one posthole were identified during the evaluation. Although no dating evidence was recovered from any of these features, one of the ditches aligns with a field boundary depicted on an early nineteenth century map and is likely to date to the post-medieval period. It is unclear whether the other linear features represent remnants of Iron Age or Roman field systemsor later agricultural activity of medieval to post-medieval date. A pit and a single posthole were discovered in the east and south of the site respectively, but these are of limited significance as their origin and date are unclear. Artefactual evidence consisted of a single fragment of modern pottery recovered from the topsoil in the south of the site.
