Full Description
At the south-western end of an evaluation trench, cutting the natural deposits, was a linear feature on a north to south orientation with shallow, convex sides and a concave base. This was at least 1.8m long, 1.5m wide and 0.34m deep. Within the ditch was a homogenous deposit of moderately compacted, mid brown silty sand. There was no dating evidence in this deposit. Sealing the feature was a 0.33m thick layer of topsoil.
Although no artefactual evidence was recovered from any of the features investigated, cartographic evidence indicates that the ditch in Trench 4 is likely to date to the post-medieval period
The ditch in Trench 4 aligns with a field boundary drawn on an Enclosure map dating to 1803. As Enclosure maps usually depict newly created parcels of land, this field boundary is likely to be contemporary with the map. A later map dating to 1839 shows that the boundary had been removed by this time.
