Full Description
A single feature was partially exposed in the southwest of the trench, a partially exposed pit which contained a single fill of mixed ash and charcoal with redeposited sand. The feature contained no artefacts but the ash and charcoal may indicate burning in situ. The environmental sample taken from this deposit identified relatively few plant remains despite the charcoal; wild species including alder and birch were identified along with grasses, but no cereal or other cultivated plant species were found. Both alder and birch are native UK tree species, and both prefer a moist environment such as a riverbank to grow. There were no other features in this trench to correspond with the anomalies of the geophysical survey.
With no other evidence this pit remains undated, but is tentatively considered most likely post-medieval or modern in date simply due to proximity to the railway lines.
