Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on land north of The Mill Adventure Base, on the periphery of Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
The proposed development lies close to the site of an early post-medieval mill, which may have replaced an earlier mill that was recorded in Norman and 13th century documentary records, resulting in the place name evidence of King’s Mill Reservoir. The reservoir was flooded in the early 19th century to provide a consistent water supply to several other mills in the surrounding area. An early 19th
century horse-drawn railway line with two tracks extended through the centre of the site connecting coal mines at Mansfield with the canal at Pinxton for onward transport and sale. The line was decommissioned when it was replacedin the mid 19th century when a locomotive line was built to the east.
This evaluation has confirmed the presence of the early 19th century railway track bed with associated flanking drainage gullies. An isolated undated, though likely modern, pit was the only other feature encountered.
