Full Description

Three features were exposed in the area between the central furrow and the modern disturbance to the south-east. Two were small pits or post-holes: they were both oval in plan, with pit 203, the further to the north of the two, being the larger at 0.90m x 0.70m. Both features were very shallow, at 0.13m and 0.09m respectively; they had similar fills of mid-brown silty coarse sand, and neither
produced dating evidence. A gully ran east-to-west between the two pits, roughly parallel to the direction of the ridge-and-furrow, and was 0.45m wide and 0.17m deep. It had a similar broad, shallow profile to that of the pits, and a similar fill, also undated. It is possible that these features formed a group, as the pits were at roughly the same distance – some 2m – from each side of the gully, and a line drawn between them would cross it at right-angles. The orientation of the gully may suggest that the features were associated with the open field, possibly forming part of a structure at its edge; the location does not seem right for these features to form part of the historic pinfold, although it is possible if the enclosure was very large or had moved over the years.
