Title Land West Of Main Street Adjacent To Briar Lea, Ragnall, Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Evaluation
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2022

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation, consisting of four 30m x 2m trenches, was undertaken in advance of the construction of four new dwellings on land to the west of Main Street, adjacent to the existing property of ‘Briar Lea’, in the village of Ragnall in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire. The results of the archaeological evaluation will be submitted in fulfilment of the relevant conditions attached to the planning permission for the development. The site lies in an area known to be of very high archaeological potential, forming part of the shrunken medieval settlement of Ragnall: it contains a complex area of earthworks including substantial hollows, mounds, and lengths of east-to-west-aligned linear banks and ditches, with the possible sites of medieval buildings. As ground works and landscaping associated with the development will have a significant negative effect on the archaeological remains. The presence of surviving earthwork ridge-and-furrow on the site, forming part of the remains of the Shrunken Medieval Village of Ragnall, was confirmed by excavation. No evidence was found for occupation of the site prior to its incorporation into the parish open-field system. The evaluated area shows a palimpsest of activity related to land and water management from the Middle Ages to the late 20th century, but no features other than the medieval furrows could be dated and no finds were retrieved.
