Full Description
A single sub-circular pit situated in the north-eastern part of the excavated site was the earliest feature encountered during the excavation. The pit profile had steep concave sides culminating into a flat base. The fill consisted of brown moderately compact sandy clay with small quartz pebble inclusions and charcoal flecks. Fifteen pieces of late 3rd century Romano-British pottery and 8 pieces of building material including part of a tegula with a Bett’s Type 1 Flange and a cut-out. Animal bone, oyster shell, metalworking slag were recovered along with charred wheat and other charred cereal grains were also present.
