Full Description
A stretch of ditch 6m in length was recorded, crossing the north-east corner of the site. It was a minimum of 3m in width. As with the ditch recorded to the west of this stretch, only a small part of the ditch lay within the excavation area, and a full profile was not recorded, but a dip in the roof of the outbuilding on the adjacent property hinted at its alignment to the east. Constraints of the excavation also meant that it was not possible to check if the two ditches were one and the same but pottery from its fill was of the same date as that from western ditch. The 5 sherds of pottery included the base of a Torksey ware jar, two sherds from a Doncaster and a sherd from a large North Lincolnshire jar, dating the group to mid/late 12th to early/mid 13th century.
It is likely that the ditch was cleaned out on several occasions. A recut was filled with a range of artefacts that included a leather shoe and cobbler’s waste, a bone box comb, four sherds of late 17th to mid/late 18th century date and a single very abraded handmade brick fragment of mid 15th to 17th century date. An environmental sample taken of this fill produced well preserved waterlogged seeds and fruit species that favoured waste ground (wet and grassland) habitats that suggested nearby hedges.
