Full Description

Three sub-circular pits lay in a rough line to the west of a wide ditch. A narrow gully, c.8m in length and 0.15m wide, extended south-west from one of the pits. It looks like a channel draining the pit but there was nothing surviving to suggest what that pit might have contained, or what its function was. Two pottery sherds of early/mid 12th to early/mid 13th century date were found in its fill.

None of the pits contained more than a few early medieval sherds but they do suggest 12th century occupation in the immediate area, broadly contemporary with the wide western ditch. The latest of these sherds occur in one of the pits which contained a mixed group of seventeen vessels of mainly mid/late 12th to early/mid 13th century date and may have been recut, with the lower fill containing 12th century pottery and upper fill containing later 12 into early/mid 13th century pottery. The group includes Lincolnshire Early Medieval Shelly ware jars and Beverley-type and Doncaster jugs. Also included are a residual Lincoln Late Saxon Shelly ware jar and three Torksey ware jars. A single fragment from a Beverley flat roof tile dates from the mid 12th century. Of note is a sherd from an imported jug, probably French, in another pit .

Two of the pits additionally contain sherds of pre-conquest 10th to 11th century date. A fourth pit close to the western wide ditch also contained some early medieval pottery sherds, but included two jug sherds of 13th to early/mid 14th century date.
