Full Description

To the north were four pits. These pits crossed the access road in a south-west/north-east alignment. One pit contained four small sherds including a small Nottingham Light-bodied jug and three shell-tempered vessels. A date between the late 13th and early/mid 14th centuries is likely for the brightly copper-glazed Nottingham jug. A narrow gully extended for at least 8m in a south-westerly direction from this pit. It was only 0.11m wide and 0.10m deep and no finds were retrieved from it. Whether the gully performed a drainage function or was a trench for a sleeper beam is unknown but it appeared to be very similar to another gully found at the south end of the site.

A small but very mixed group of pottery came from another of the pits. The latest vessels probably date to the first half of the 14th century. Two flat roof tile fragments from the pit are of mid 12th to 14th century type. This group also includes two 10th to mid/late 11th century Torksey ware jar sherds. Four shell-tempered sherds of early medieval type came from a third pit. Two of the vessels are unlikely to predate the early/mid 12th century whilst the other two could be of pre-conquest date, although the types continue until the late 12th century. A single Lincoln Glazed ware jug sherd of late 13th to early/mid 14th century date came from the last pit.
