Full Description

A straight gully extended in a south-westerly direction and was at least 5.50m in length and 0.72m wide. It cut through a Saxon posthole, near its terminal. Unfortunately its relationship to the nearby ditch is uncertain as the point at which it met the larger ditch lay beyond the limits of the excavation. A group of sherds from forty-nine potteryvessels was retrieved from two sections along its length. With the exception of a glazed jar or pitcher sherd in Stamford ware all of the vessels are domestic coarsewares in shell and quartz-tempered fabrics. The absence of other glazed wares and vessels in Lincolnshire Early Medieval Shell-tempered ware strongly suggests that this group belongs to the first half of the 12th century.
