Full Description

Two rectangular compact cobble floors and associated features were situated within the central northern part of the site. Both floor surfaces consisted of quartz and riverine pebbles compacted and set into the natural clay. One floor partially overlay filled-in a ditch and continued beyond the northern limits of the excavation area. It lay beneath a dark brown occupation deposit. The layer produced a mixed group of pottery sherds representing twenty-three vessels ranging in date from the 15th to late 17th to mid 18th centuries. The latest vessels include black and brown-glazed earthenwares and slipwares. Fragments from eleven handmade bricks of mixed 14th to 17th century date and two pieces of late medieval to post-medieval flat roof tile were also found, as well as animal bone, quantities of metalworking slag and nails were also found in this layer.

Abutting floor on its south side was a second rectangular cobbled surface which was cut by a small north-south aligned drainage gully, square stakehole and a circular posthole. Square posthole contained sherds from nine vessels in a fairly fresh condition. Most of the sherds are from Humberware jugs of mid 15th to mid 16th century date. The latest of the three vessels found in posthole belongs to the late 17th or 18th centuries. These features were sealed by a dark brown occupation layer that contained late 18th-19th century artefacts that including metalwork and worked antler. The pottery comprised sherds representing forty-two vessels, mostly black and brown glazed earthenwares of early to mid/late 18th century date, although the group also includes slipwares and a Nottingham Stoneware mug. Two flat roof tiles, one of which has cracked during firing, and a handmade brick fragment of late medieval to post-medieval date were also found.

These surfaces are regular in layout and may have had structures over them although no associated foundations were recorded. The large quantities of metal slag encountered, together with the quantity of nails and a horsehoe suggests that this was a blacksmith’s workshop.

A third cobbled area was present to the south of the second cobbled area and was also constructed using angular quartz fragments compacted into the natural clay. It sealed earlier two pits.

Situated to the west of cobbled structures, a single burnt brick, possibly a post-pad, sat upon the surface of cobbled area.
