Full Description
The well shaft was rectangular in plan, measuring 1.45m x 1.15m and was 1.25m deep. The pear-shaped well pit was 2.9m x 2.10m, tapering to 1m in width on its east side, where it cut an earlier pit. It was probably filled in during the first half of the 18th century.
A layer of straw was found in the base of the shaft 0.20m thick overlain by a black silty deposit which also contained large quantities of decayed straw several fragments of cobbler’s leather waste, and degraded hurdle-like timbers that could have been the decomposed well lining were found. The silt deposit produced pottery fragments from twelve vessels, none of which appear to show signs of being deposited in a waterlogged environment suggesting that they had been introduced at the end of the life of the well. The group is unlikely to post-date the first quarter of the 18th century. After the collapse of this material a retaining wall was constructed on the north side of the well that was
subsequently followed by silty fills. One fill contained sherds from six vessels, the latest of which belong to the period between the mid/late 16th and mid/late 17th centuries. At least three of these vessels are residual. The final fill produced sherds from seven coarseware vessels of mid 17th to early/mid 18th century date. There are no cross-joins between any of the well fills, perhaps suggesting that each fill represented a different episode, although this could have taken place over a short period of time. Two handmade bricks of late medieval to post-medieval type and three fragments of flat roof tile came from the fills of the well. One small fragment of tile is of 17th to 20th century date. Three fragments from a single mid 15th to 17th handmade brick were recovered from a retaining wall.
