Full Description

Irregular-shaped pits, with one pit partially truncating the eastern edge of the other. The truncating pit also cut through earlier gully on its south side. The truncated pit contained a mixed group of pottery, handmade brick and tile, ranging in date from the 12th to early 19th centuries. The small group of seven vessels from the truncating pit included black and brown-glazed coarsewares and slipwares of late 17th to mid/late 18th century date. Large fragments from three handmade bricks found in the truncating pit are of late medieval to early post-medieval type and like the single flat roof tile from the feature are of general 14th to 16th century date. Both pits contained large numbers of nails and some iron slag and may have been associated with smithing on the site.
