Full Description
Circular pit had near vertical sides and a flat base. It was 0.95m in diameter and 1.30m deep. The upper part of its north-east quadrant had been removed by the excavation of a cattle grave. The lower half of the pit was filled with large pieces of stone rubble. Its upper fill was a very dark brown soil with a few charcoal flecks and pieces of stone. The ten vessels found in two fills include a range of mainly 16th century vessels, including black and brown-glazed earthenwares, Midlands Yellow ware, Cistercian ware and a globular Siegburg drinking jug. The sherds are fairly large and are in a relatively fresh condition suggesting that they could represent primary deposition of mid to late 16th century date. A mixed range of flat roof tile and handmade brick fragments found in the pit is of medieval to early post-medieval date and does not contradict the dating evidence from the pottery.
