Full Description

Within a trench, a possible storage pit was investigated. It was filled by three fills and was oval in shape. The primary fill was a light grey-brown silty sand, the secondary fill was a very dark brown-black sand and the tertiary fill was a dark grey-brown silty sand. The sample taken of fill suggested burnt material in the fill, which has been identified as carbonised heather stems.

Approximately 8m to the northwest, part of a second likely pit was revealed. This was oval in shape and filled by dark grey-brown silty sand. The sample of fill suggested the presence of burnt material, subsequently identified as oak and hazel charcoal.

The pits were presumably used to dispose of burnt material (heather stems, and oak and hazel charcoal) as no in situ burning was noted.
