Description
The development site is contained within part of a single field which is classified as Grade 2 agricultural land and is currently uncultivated. The field boundaries are hedged and incorporate occasional trees. Trees help to screen Bolham Manor which lies north-west of the site. The proposed development site lies within National and Regional Character Area of Sherwood.
The work involved the excavation of twenty trenches, all of which measured 50m by 1.8m. The trenches were positioned to target potential archaeological anomalies identified during the previous geophysical survey, as well as to provide a sample across the remaining areas of the study site.
Features found in three trenches are likely to be archaeological but no datable evidence was recovered. It is possible that one feature was a tree-throw but it was only partly revealed in plan so a definitive interpretation was not made. The pits in one evaluation trench were presumably used to dispose of burnt material (heather stems, and oak and hazel charcoal) as no in situ burning was noted.
