Full Description
A layer of natural iron panning was visible in a trench, but the results of sample processing were sterile. The panning was probably caused by water moving across site. The iron panning was subsequently machined to reveal a feature. This feature was only partially exposed so it was unclear whether it represented a ditch terminus or a pit. The feature was filled by two fills that were dark grey-brown silty sands. Carbonised heather stems were recovered from it's fill. It is possible that the feature was a tree-throw but it was only partly revealed in plan so a definitive interpretation was not made.
In the middle of the trench was a drainage ditch which ran parallel to a land drain. The ditch was shallow with irregular sloping sides and filled by mid-grey-brown clayey silt. The sample taken of the ditch was devoid of carbonised plant remains.
