Full Description

A ditch, aligned east-west, was revealed at the northwestern corner of the stripped area. Where excavated, adjacent to the western limit of excavation, the feature was around 0.75m wide by 0.30m deep, widening slightly on the southern side of the western end and deepening in the adjacent part of the base, probably as a result of animal and/or root disturbance. The feature, which had steeply concave sides breaking gradually to a concave base, was filled by mid brownish grey clayey sandy silt. To the east, it intersected with a trial trench, aligning with the possible pits recorded during the evaluation. These would now appear to represent the largely ploughed out, easternmost extent of the ditch. The feature was not visible in the area east of the trial trench. The segment excavated across the ditch produced 20 sherds of pottery from 10 different vessels. While not strongly diagnostic the assemblage has been assigned a date of 2nd to 3rd century AD. A fragment of fired clay or daub was also recovered, together with 7 fragments of bone including horse and sheep/goat.

From the results of the most recent phase of fieldwork, it would appear that the possible pits were most likely intermittent remnants of the ditch.
