Abstract/Summary

A scheme of Archaeological Strip, Map and Sample recording was undertaken on the site of a small scale residential development off Top Pasture Lane, North Wheatley, Nottinghamshire. North Wheatley is situated on the line of the Roman road (now Tillbridge Lane) running between Lincoln and Doncaster, and previous archaeological investigations in the area have identified evidence for settlement north and west of the village. A settlement was in existence at North Wheatley when the Domesday Survey was compiled in 1086, while documentary sources indicate the presence of a church from at least the 12th century. A programme of trial trenching carried out on 5th and 6th January 2017 revealed a group of shallow, cut features in the westernmost of two proposed house-plots. The features, interpreted as the probable remnants of largely ploughed out pits, may have been associated with two Roman potsherds recovered from the immediate area. Two probable furrows (probably the bases of furrows forming part of a ridge and furrow field system) were also recorded, aligned at right angles to the trench. The programme of Strip, Map and Sample investigation revealed a ditch aligned with the cluster of features identified by trial trenching, as well as a much larger ditch interpreted as defining the boundary of an enclosure. In the light of the most recent phase of investigation the ‘pits’ or ‘hollows’ recorded during trial trenching may be reinterpreted as the largely ploughed remnants of the easternmost extent of the smaller ditch. Pottery from the ditch is Roman, dated 2nd to 3rd century AD. The larger ditch, aligned southwest-northeast appears to form a section of an enclosing ditch around an area of occupation. The ditch terminated to the southwest, probably at the point of an opening into the enclosure. Excavations across the line of the ditch produced a sizeable assemblage of pottery, mostly Roman, from the period AD120 to AD180, but with material of probable mid to late 1st century date from the earliest levels. Part of a horse’s skull recovered from the terminal may be interpreted as a placed deposit. A soil sample taken the higher levels of the ditch fill produced charred wheat and oat grains, with a little chaff, charred tubers, and small legume, fumitory and other weed seeds.
