Full Description
The U-shaped ditch was located towards the centre of the first trench, it was aligned East-West and measured c. 1.74m in width and 0.57m in depth. This ditch contained two fills, with the lowermost consisting of a naturally formed mid greyish-brown clayey silt with occasional charcoal fleck inclusions. A 40 Litre bulk environmental sample collected for paleoenvironmental analysis, identified very small fragmented bone but no other relevant ecofacts. The top fill consisted of a naturally formed mid yellowish-grey silty-clay with occasional charcoal flecks from which no finds were recovered. Ditch was truncated to its south by a modern field drain which prevented any stratigraphic relationship from being established with another ditch located immediate to its south.
Another ditch of unknown function was aligned East-West on a parallel alignment with the other ditch and measured 0.81m in width and 0.04m in depth. A single fill consisting of a dark brownish-grey clayey-silt was recorded within the context from which ten animal bone fragmentsidentified as cattle, were recovered.
These two ditches both aligned with the East-West anomalies identified during the geophysical survey. As such, one of these features may represent an agricultural furrow of medieval to post-medieval date, however this identification is complicated by the modern field drain truncation.
A Northeast-Southwest aligned U-shaped gully was located towards the northern end of the first trench and measured 0.45m in width and 0.08m in depth. A singe deliberately deposited dark brownish-grey clayey-silt fill with occasional charcoal flecks was recorded within. A 20 Litre bulk environmental sample retained for paleoenvironmental analysis, identified tiny pieces of undiagnosed burnt bone and a small fragmented iron (Fe) object within. Due to the absence of any diagnostic materials within the fill, the gully remains provisionally undated.
A large, symmetrically shaped, curvilinear ditch, with steep sides and a flat base was recorded towards the western end of this Trench. This ditch was aligned approximately northwest to northeast, measured 0.91m in width and 0.66m thickness, and contained a single naturally formed light greyish-brown silty-clay fill with occasional charcoal flecks. A 30 Litre bulk environmental sample was retained for paleoenvironmental analysis which identified several fragments of charcoal and undiagnostic bone fragments within. The curvilinear ditch could likely represent the corner of an enclosure ditch. However, due to the lack of finds/diagnostic materials, it remains provisionally undated.
