Full Description
Cutting the subsoil was an east-west aligned grave. This had vertical sides and a flat base and was 0.47m wide and 0.88m deep with a 0.63m surviving length that had not been disturbed by the contractors. It contained the lower legs and feet of a skeleton. These were reunited with the remainder of the bones, which had already been removed by the contractors/police, for post-excavation study. The grave had been backfilled with brownish-red sand with occasional limestone and sandstone lumps. This was cut by an east-west aligned linear feature measuring at least 2.8m long, 0.44m wide and 0.52m deep. With near vertical sides and a flat base, this was filled with mid reddish brown sand.
The remains are of a male individual in their 30s, who suffered from osteoarthritis in their left hip joint and Paget’s disease of bone (PDB) in several areas of the skeleton. Their dentition had a fair degree of wear and some evidence of healing dental abscesses.
