Full Description

Only a small assemblage of datable material was recovered from the excavated features. As such, those features listed within this section have been identified as belonging to the Romano-British period based upon their form and location, together with their correspondence with the geophysical results which suggest that they are associated with the multiple ditch systems adjacent to the previous Fosse Way (the modern A46).

1st Trench: A pit was circular in plan with a diameter of 0.56 m and a depth of 0.1 m and a flat base.

2nd Trench: Contained two ditches. These features correspond to anomalies identified in the geophysical survey. One ditch was aligned southeast-northwest and measured 2 m long x 0.8 m wide x 0.27 m deep with an irregular base. The other ditchwas aligned southeast-northwest and measured 2m long x 0.8 m wide x 0.5 m deep with a sub-ā€˜Vā€™ shaped profile. This ditch contained a post pipe.

5th Trench: Contained two ditches. One ditch corresponds to an anomaly identified in the geophysical survey. The other ditch is not identified in the geophysical survey. The first ditch was aligned northwest-southeast and measured 1.8 m long x 2.29 m wide x 0.78 m deep with an irregular base. The other ditch was aligned northeast-southwest and measured 1.8 m long x 0.85 m wide x 0.33 m deep with an irregular profile.

6th Trench: One ditch was identified as well as two pits as being potentially Roman. The ditch was aligned east-west and measured 1.8 m long x 0.9 m wide x 0.24 m deep with a flat base. One pit was sub-circular in plan measuring 0.66 m x 0.51 m x 0.13 m deep with a rounded base. The other pit was circular in plan measuring 0.65 m in diameter with a depth of 0.15 m and a sub-flat base.

7th Trench: One ditch was identified as potential Roman. The ditch was aligned north-south and measured 2 m x 1.7 m x 0.45 m deep with an irregular profile. A worked flint was recovered from a basal fill.

10th Trench: One ditch was identified as potential Roman. The ditch measured 3.7 m long x 0.8 m wide x 0.43 m deep with a flat base. The ditch cut another ditch.

37th Trench: Contained one ditch and one curvilinear ditch. These features were not identified in the geophysical survey. The ditch was aligned southeast-northwest and measured 1.8 m long x 1.3 m wide x c.0.4 m deep. The ditch cut the curvilinear ditch and had been cut by modern land drain. The curvilinear ditch was curvilinear in plan aligned northwest-southeast and measured 1 m long x 0.66 m wide x 0.4 m deep.
